Why ‘Self-Sufficiency’ Should Replace ‘Sustainability’ in the Environmental Movement

Activist Post

The environmental movement is in love with the word ‘sustainable’. Admittedly, it’s a wonderful word in the purest sense, meaning;  1. capable of being sustained, 2. capable of being continued with minimal long-term effect on the environment.

Who doesn’t want those capabilities? Yet, ‘sustainability‘, like everything else good and pure, has seemingly been hijacked by the ruling oligarchs as a way to impose more top-down control of society. Passionate environmentalists are beginning to realize that the only way to affect real change is by becoming sustainable individuals through self-sufficiency. This focus on individual empowerment will naturally lead to increased liberty, as it minimizes the tactics used by mega-cartels and government to control our core needs of food, electricity, or medicine.  Living in an environmentally and socially sustainable world should be an obvious goal, but it won’t work if imposed at the barrel of a gun.

Removing individual liberties through restrictive legislation can never amount to sustainability, since much of the proposed legislation doesn’t even ‘minimize the long-term effect on the environment.’  Banning incandescent light bulbs, for example, in favor of more energy-efficient but chemically-poisoning CFLs, demonstrates that our leaders have no genuine desire for the environment, but only wish to control consumer choice.  It’s similar to favoring nuclear power because it seems cleaner today, yet when the reactors meltdown, or waste needs to be disposed of, it irrevocably ruins Mother Nature. Legislating something as petty as what type of light bulbs we are allowed to purchase only indicates the tyrannical level of micromanagement intended for their view of a sustainable society.

Those who are trying to force lifestyle modifications on the public, while they jet-set and limo around the world, have forever stained the authenticity of the ‘sustainability movement’. However, if we, as environmentally-concerned individuals, focus on becoming self-reliant, we will not only break our dependency on many of the establishment’s control mechanisms, we’ll also limit our impact on the environment and gain the ability to ‘be sustained’ — the two core definitions of sustainable. That’s the real triple bottom line for environmental activists: sustainable self, sustainable environment, and genuine independence.

If the current oil spike continues, the industrial food and big box store machine will grind to a halt, or at least make non-local food impossibly expensive.  Perhaps then the masses will discover how much power this system has over them.  We’re already seeing the makings of a global food crisis. By producing some of your own food and buying the shortfall from your local organic cooperative, you can come close to food self-reliance. This type of food production/consumption is healthier for us, it reduces the impact on the environment in countless ways, and it breaks our dependence on factory food.

Furthermore, when we apply some level of alternative energy, we not only stand in defiance of the corporate energy state and the endless resource wars, we commit to cleaner energy technology. When we can harvest our own fresh water, we can survive without chemically-altered “public” services.  When we become a producer instead of a consumer, we inch closer to breaking free from the rat-race economy while limiting our rubbish. And when we learn to make and apply natural health remedies, we discover a level of freedom from the toxins of Big Pharma.
By the very nature of becoming more self-sufficient, we’ll limit our individual footprint on nature by maximizing the use of all resources. Instead of being ‘sustainable’ by taking things to the recycling center, anything useful is re-used. Mason jars are used for canning, shampoo bottles are refilled with homemade or castile soap, empty milk jugs are used to start seedlings in, and so on.  In short, very little waste is produced when we are committed to becoming independent from the consumer culture.

Because the only genuine path to sustainability in any broad sense is through one person and community at a time, the environmental movement must shift its focus to personal self-sufficiency. And because sustainability cannot be achieved through forced coercion, gently educate your peers when they express interest.  On a broader scale, propose ideas to make your neighborhood or town less dependent on outside influences and seek like-minded volunteers to assist in projects.

Ultimately, in order for environmentalists to affect real change we must do as Gandhi said and “be the change you want to see in the world.”  This doesn’t mean preaching, picketing, or protesting.  It means living the change. And the most effective way to live a more sustainable existence is to dedicate ourselves to breaking free from the poisonous system itself.

(NaturalNews) Concerns over the Fukushima nuclear power plant explosion in Japan in March 2011 continue to grow. China began reporting traces of radioactive material along its coastline on March 27, 2011. An article in Discovery News dated March 28, 2011 reports that radioactive dust and other materials are falling onto farm crops and other vegetation. Highly radioactive water is seeping into the Pacific Ocean. A Reuters report published on March 29, 2011 stated that radioactive iodine in trace amounts were being detected in Eastern Russia. As the supply of kelp and potassium iodide dwindle across the United States, many people are searching for safe and natural alternatives for iodine. One such alternative is black walnut tincture.

Black Walnut Tincture Is a Safe and Effective Source For Iodine

Black walnut tincture is not only high in a bio-assimilable, plant form of iodide, but it also has anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, and fungicidal properties. The amount of iodine in black walnut tincture is so high that it can be used as a substitute for iodine antiseptics. Black walnut tincture works as an iodine antiseptic because it is an oxidizing agent. This means it acts as an electrolyte which upsets the cellular balance of any bacteria or other microbial it comes in contact with.

In his blog, master herbalist Dr. Richard Schulze mentions using black walnut tincture with his students during the Chernobyl nuclear power plant meltdown. Dr. Schulze says he suggested that patients be wiped down with iodine tincture or black walnut tincture. The iodine in the two tinctures was absorbed into the body through the skin. Testing later showed that the patients who had been “painted” with black walnut or iodine tinctures were just as protected against radiation exposure as the patients who took potassium iodide (SSKI). Simply wiping a small amount of black walnut or iodine tincture on a knee cap or the palm of one hand was enough to meet the body’s need for iodine, according to Dr. Schulze.

How to Make Black Walnut Tincture

Black walnut tincture is easy to make, but it is not easy to get high quality black walnut hulls. Dark black walnut hull powder can be obtained from reputable herb companies. However, master herbalists agree that the “greener” in color the black walnut tincture is, the better the tincture will be. Many herbalists like to wildcraft black walnuts off of male trees soon after the trees bud in the spring. They look for an emerald green color on the hulls. About fifteen green black walnuts are needed for every quart (or liter) of 100 proof vodka in order to make the tincture.

Clean a quart sized glass canning jar, and fill the jar with black walnut powder to the halfway mark. Pour enough vodka over the powdered hulls to cover the herbs and to create a two-inch float line of vodka above the herbs. As the herbs absorb the vodka, they will begin to swell. Add more vodka in order to keep the float line at two inches. Screw on the lid, shake well, and store in a cool, dark place for three days.

After three days, pour the contents of the jar into a high quality blender. Whirl the herbs in the blender for a few minutes, then pour this blend back into the canning jar. Add more vodka to make a two inch float. Allow this mixture to sit for a minimum of two weeks, shaking the jar once or twice daily. After two weeks, the black walnut tincture will be ready to use.

The United States and Population Control

Posted by angelbabe43 on April 7, 2011

By Emil Jirado

Reports have it that both the United States and the United Nations are endorsing the reproductive health bill. There will be a plenary debate on the measure come May 9 upon the resumption of session.

But of course. The US and the UN are all for population control.

Let’s rewind a bit to see how involved the US really is on population control. In December 1974, shortly after the first major international conference was held under UN auspices in Bucharest, Romania, several of the major US government agencies—the Central Intelligence Agency, the State Department and the Agency for International Development)—submitted their inputs.

Their contributions were combined into one report entitled “Implications of Worldwide Population Growth on US Security and Overseas Interests.” The final study was more than 200 pages long.

That crucial document became what is known as NSSM 200. It stands for National Security Study Memorandum and the number 200 identified the order in which it was produced.

Records show that the original request for a review of overseas population policies is also called NSSM 200, and was written April 27, 1974 by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. The actual study which covered 229 pages of text represents one stage of the NSSM 200 correspondence series, and was submitted on December 10, 1974. It became the official guide to foreign policy November 26, 1976, when a National Security Decision Memorandum (NSDM 314) was signed. It endorsed the findings of the study.

Who actually was responsible for the study? NSSM was compiled by the National Security Council, which is the highest level of command in the US government. The NSC is headed by no less than the US President and his designated Security Advisor, and its purpose is to coordinate the overseas operations of all executive branches of the US government.

Now, read this: Specifically, NSSM 200 targets 13 countries of “special US political and strategic interest,” which include India, Brazil, Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey, Ethiopia and Columbia. Why? I will come to that later.

***

The question is whether or not NSSM 200 is still in force. Records show that it still is, technically. It remains the official paper on population until it is replaced by another of equal importance. However, the implementation of the guidelines may differ from one administration to another.

Former President Jimmy Carter, for example, showed considerably less interest in curbing population growth than did his predecessors, former US President Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. The Reagan administration took a somewhat different approach (i.e. the Mexico City policy that banned direct US financing for abortions). Records also show that funds for population control increased rapidly and dramatically during the Reagan and Bush years, but this did not necessarily indicate a new NSC direction.

Why was the NSSM 200 only discovered in 1990? This is a highly classified document, which the public—much less the people of the developing countries affected—should not know about. But in the mid-1990s, there was a schedule for declassifying secret documents. The document was not actually made public until almost a year later, when it was given to the US National Archives in response to a request from an American journalist working for the Information Project for Africa.

The reason reportedly for the document’s declassification is first, by 1990 at least, many of study’s recommendations for population control on aid-receiving countries had been achieved; and second, records also showed that the US had elected George Bush, a former CIA director, in 1988, which may have signaled to classification review personnel that the American public had grown more tolerant to covert US activities overseas.

***

Now, we come to the reasons why the US wanted to control other countries’ population.

NSSM, according to records and studies, showed US concern for population growth in the developing world threatening US security in four basic ways. First, certain large nations stand to gain significant political power and influence as a result. Second, the US and its western allies have a vital interest in strategic materials, like mineral and ore, which have to be imported from less-developed countries like the Philippines. Third, societies with high birth rates have large numbers of young people, who are more likely than older people to challenge global power structures. And last, population growth in relatively disadvantaged countries jeopardizes US investments. Santa Banana, the bottom line is US self-interest!

The report cites Brazil that could benefit politically with population growth. Since Brazil clearly dominates the continent demographically, Brazil could outnumber US residents by the end of the century. This would give Brazil a growing power status not only in Latin America but on the world scene over the next 25 years. Nigeria, likewise with a growing population to number 135 million by the end of this century, would have political and strategic influence in Africa south of the Sahara.

How does population control help the West acquire minerals? It is said that the location of vast reserves of higher-grade ores of most minerals favors increasing dependence of all industrialized regions on imports from less-developed countries. Studies show that the real problems of mineral supplies lie, not in basic sufficiency, but, in the politico-economic issues of access, terms of exploitation and exploration and division of the benefits.

Another issue is the role of the youth. Records show that young people have historically been advocates for change and are more prone to confront imperialism. This is especially true in the Philippines with the youth now more involved in political and economic problems.

There is also the issue of US commercial investments being affected by growing birth rates overseas. The NSSM 200 document points out that the growing nations are hard put in providing their growing needs. Thus, it warns, they are likewise to make increased demands of foreign investors. Thus under such circumstances, western corporate holdings are likely to be expropriated or subjected to arbitrary intervention.

***

United States and United Nations policies repeatedly assert that birth control is necessary for development. This is also the core of the advocacy of population control through a reproductive health law. And the US and the UN do it by means of providing less-developed nations like the Philippines with grants and aids, like the involvement of the World Bank and other agencies of the United Nations in development.

For instance, the NSSM 200 document advises the US government to play an important role in establishing the United Nations Fund for Population Activities to spearhead a multilateral effort in population as a complement to the bilateral actions of USAID and other donor countries.

The document even asserts the need for mandatory programs like the appraisal of assistance to less-developed countries and their requirements.

***

Now comes the rub. The NSSM 200 document requires US diplomatic and embassy officials to be alert to opportunities to demonstrate to the leaders of less-developed countries like the Philippines on the consequences of rapid population growth. That’s basically propaganda by imperialist America.

This propaganda includes invitations to Washington extended to every leader of a less developed nation. That explains the yearly homage of every Philippine president to Washington.

Simply put, the slower the Philippine population grows, the better for Washington.

We must be blind if we don’t see through all these.
