Canada Okays GMO Wheat

Farm Wars

Canada is giving the go ahead to GMO wheat. Although it is not ready for production yet, the plans are set:

The National Research Council plans to develop genetically modified wheat in Canada — a measure long resisted by the country’s wheat farmers.

The NRC says Canadian wheat farmers are becoming less productive and need to adapt, especially in the face of climate change. It suggests GM wheat as a solution.

In the past week, senior NRC management has been unveiling its long-term strategy to its researchers and other staff. The goal, says a leaked copy of the plan, is to become a “market-driven organization whose primary goal is to develop and deploy technology.”

And it says building better wheat is one of the top goals.

Canada is “losing global market share for our exports,” it says. “Our annual productivity is ranked last against other top producing countries.” As demand rises, “climate change is impacting our agricultural production.”

The document outlines how transgenic wheat could produce new hybrids that will be “a game changer.” (Transgenic organisms have DNA modified through genetic engineering techniques, to create a desirable trait such as resistance to disease.)

But the document warns that a “huge effort” will be necessary to decode all the genetic material in wheat and to learn what traits can be manipulated in the lab.

Vancouver Sun

In my article, “America’s Silent Killing Fields,” I cite how statistics are manipulated and any resistance by wheat farmers is swept under the table:

A March, 2009 report on GMO Compass states:

A majority of farmers in the USA have expressed approval in a poll on genetically modified wheat. They expect gene technology to contribute towards solutions to current problems in wheat cultivation…..

In conducting the survey, the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) approached in writing 21,000 farmers with a wheat cultivation area of at least 200 hectares. A third of those addressed participated in the poll. The object of the survey was the opinion of farmers towards a petition that was formulated by the NAWG and contained essential statements towards genetically modified wheat. Three-quarters (76 per cent) of the participating farmers agreed with the petition.

Let’s do the math:

NAWG approached 21,000 farmers. One-third, or 7,000 farmers participated. Out of that 7,000, 76%, or 5,320, approved of GMO wheat. 5,320 is only 25% of the 21,000 farmers originally approached. NOT A MAJORITY OF FARMERS! This statement is simply not true! The pollsters are twisting the statistics to suit their own purposes. What about the other 14,000 farmers, or two-thirds of all farmers who were not represented in the poll?

Five years ago, the Monsanto company abandoned plans for the market introduction of genetically modified wheat, since many farmers feared losses in wheat export to Europe and Asia. “Our farmers still have no interest in herbicide-resistant Roundup wheat,” declared a spokesperson of the NAWG. However, farmers demand increased yield and wheat types that better withstand heat, dryness and cold. As stated by the NAWG, “Our poll is a strong signal that farmers are ready to plant genetically modified wheat.”

Monsanto clearly benefits from the pollster’s twisted statistics. Who cares about the truth, full steam ahead!

The lie of higher yields is also being spread in order to promote these abominations, but Devinder Sharma states:

I draw your attention to a research experiment being reported from Switzerland for transgene x environment interactions in genetically modified wheat. The team of researchers, led by Simon L Zeller from the Institute of Evolutionary Ecology and Environment Studies at the University of Zurich, had used the transgene wheat variety Bobwhite SH 98 26 transformed with a powdery mildew resistance gene Pm3b. They grew four offspring pairs, each consisting of a GM line and its corresponding non-GM line, under different soil nutrient conditions and also treated for fungicide treatments in the glasshouse as well as in the field.

What is interesting is to see the performance of the transgene in the glasshouse conditions and in the fields. It differed quite significantly. This is what the researchers found: Without fungicide treatment, in the glasshouse GM lines had increased vegetative biomass and seed number and a twofold yield compared with control lines. In the field these results were reversed. Fertilization generally increased GM/control differences in the glasshouse but not in the field. Two of four GM lines showed up to 56% yield reduction and a 40-fold increase of infection with ergot disease Claviceps purpurea compared with their control lines in the field experiment; one GM line was very similar to its control

Even if wheat farmers in Canada and the U.S. don’t want their wheat genetically modified, and yields have not proven to be greater, but in fact less in controlled experiments, it doesn’t matter. Whatever underhanded manipulations these compromised governments have to do to appease their genetically modified partners in crime, they will do, and we are simply cannon fodder. Is there anything that will stop these criminals?

It seems that we are being rolled over by a juggernaut that is so big that any resistance is crushed. So, what do we do? Dig in and plant like your life depends on it because it does. It is up to us as individuals to make the difference. Boycott all GMO foods, and grow, grow, grow your own food. Grow enough for your neighbors. Grow as much as you can, and save the seeds.  We are in the fight of our lives.

Due to intense pressure, the following statement was released today, April 7, 2011, by the National Research Council of Canada:

Update. Thursday, April 7, 2011: The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) issued a statement to clarify that it has no plans to research genetically modified (GM) wheat.

NRC now states: “GM wheat is not an objective of the NRC wheat program. We will be developing a number of tools that will be used to reduce the breeding cycle, increase yield and adapt to climate stresses. GM varieties are not contemplated at this time.”

“GM varieties are not contemplated AT THIS TIME.” Hopefully, the pressure can be sustained to keep them from contemplating GM varieties at ANY time. Go Canada!

The BioPirates of Science: Genetic Engineering – Science or Hoax?

Genetic Engineering (song)

Farm Wars

Only in America can a beleaguered company with a checker past such as Monsanto’s, which includes a nasty little habit of poisoning entire towns with toxic waste, battle it’s way to the top of the dung heap to deliver a fatal blow to the people and planet with a deadly and insidious type of chemical and biological warfare via the genetic modification and patenting of transgenic seeds, as well as the coating of our farmland with toxic chemicals.

And to top it all off, the U.S. government, which is supposed to be financed by we the people, is actively promoting this biological warfare by stealthily allowing the rampant infection of approximately 85% of our processed food with unregulated transgenes that Monsanto executives admit will have unknown effects on the environment and life.

Did I mention that these transgenes also include a virus that is 70-90% identical to the HIV and Hep B viruses?

Genomic Map of CAMV Wikimedia Commons

Because of the limitations of the technology, in most cases the process will also necessarily involve the insertion of genetic material from at least one foreign pathogen, the most common of which (the 35S promoter) is taken from a virus which is very similar to Hepatitis B and related to HIV. The consequences of using such elements have even been questioned by researchers at the John Innes Institute, one of the UK’s premier research establishments in the field of agricultural genetic engineering. Despite this, routine use of such pathogen-derived elements continues.

The Cauliflower Mosaic Virus promoter (CaMV 35S) is used in most transgenic crops to activate foreign genes which have been artificially inserted into the host plant. It is potentially dangerous.

Did you get that? Approximately 85% of the processed food on our store shelves contains products infected with transgenic material containing a virus that is 70-90% identical to the HIV and Hep B viruses. And our government, in collusion with companies such as Monsanto, is in charge of the attack, using “science” as a battle shield to fend off any who would question their tactics. But can what these people are doing actually be called “science?”

The “Science” of Genetic Engineering

The scientific method is defined by Merriam-Webster Online as:

Principles and procedures for the systematic pursuit of knowledge involving the recognition and formulation of a problem, the collection of data through observation and experiment, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.

Scientific methods are based on the recognition and formulation of a problem, collecting data through experiment and observation, then the formulation of a hypotheses, which leads to a solid conclusion of fact.

After only 20 years or so of development genetic engineering still involves processes which are random and ‘trial and error’ in nature, and in that sense they are imprecise and unscientific. The biotechnologist has little or no prior predictive power as to how a new gene will behave in the host organism. Without demonstrable predictive power it is inappropriate to refer to any process as ‘engineering’ or ‘science-based’.

After well over 20 years, just why is the so-called genetic engineering process still trial and error?

Even in simple biological organisms like bacteria, the total potential interactions between genetic components run into many millions. These relationships have until now been managed by the intelligence of the organism’s own DNA. It is now proposed that these relationships should be ‘controlled’ by the same species whose own limited intelligence has mistakenly and irretrievably peppered the globe with unmanageable nuclear waste – man.

In traditional plant breeding it is the highly sophisticated discriminatory intelligence of the plant which ultimately determines which genes may be accepted as part of the newly created organism, and it is that same intelligence which determines their placement and functioning within it. This process is driven by the information and knowledge contained within the DNA of the plant itself and exercised as an integral part of the natural sexual breeding process.

With genetic engineering this process is completely bypassed. Single genes are selected by the ‘scientist’ and randomly inserted into the genome of the host organism. The scientist has no control over their placement. In fact the plant geneticist has little or no knowledge as to where the new genes should be placed in any case; and usually he does not know where they have actually lodged even after his work has been completed. He simply “hopes for the best.” Furthermore the inserted genes will frequently be taken from totally unrelated species.

The genetic engineering process:
Aggie the Traveling Agrobacterium

And still, no valid risk assessment testing is done.

The problem with calling genetically engineered organisms safe is that there are no valid risk assessments being done on them. There is no research, really, being done into the health or environmental effects of a genetically engineered organism. Certainly no work that is published in the peer-reviewed literature that isn’t proprietary. Corporations promoting these things claim that they have done research, but you can’t get any information on it because it’s all claimed to be proprietary.

As Dr. Bereano explains in this interview, genetic engineering is based on an extremely oversimplified model that suggests that by taking out or adding one or several genes, you can create a particular effect or result.

However, this reductionist model is nowhere near complete.

“First of all, genomes are so complicated with so many interactions within the genes of the genome that we don’t really understand it well,” Dr. Bereano says. “Let me give a simple example.

The genome in a cell in your eyeball is identical to the genome of a cell in your pancreas, but your eyeball does not make insulin. The constituents of what’s in a genome are not the end of the story as to what that cell is going to produce and do.

There are in the human body maybe about 30,000 genes but there are millions of proteins. These proteins are produced by very subtle and different interactions among the genes in different locations in the body. There are proteins which turn on insulin manufacturing to the cells in the pancreas and don’t turn it on in your eyeball

… It’s important to understand that the structure of the genome is not determinative of what that cell does.

Yet, the kind of mental model that’s being used in all of these discussions is what I call the Lego model or the tinker toy model. Let’s take out a yellow piece or let’s put in a green piece… but it’s not an issue just of structure—it’s of interaction.

These things are not being studied well. How stable is this genome after it is altered? In many instances we don’t know. It might change spontaneously. There are lots of questions there.

They have this very simplistic model and then they claim that these results are going to flow from it. But biology is much more complicated than that.”

Laboratory Accreditation and Industry Oversight

We can see from the above information that the “science” of genetic engineering is conducted in no way resembling any form of true scientific methodology, so how do we know that companies such as Monsanto are even qualified to conduct such experiments? We don’t. Biotech laboratories seem to be bereft of any form of mandatory accreditation process. In fact, it seems that any accreditation is voluntary.

Theoretically, it seems that Monsanto could set up shop in a cardboard box, create a frankenvirus, get peer reviewed studies from other labs in cardboard boxes, then unleash this abomination on the world without consequences for its actions if/when people die. Especially when backed by the U.S. government. I cannot find any evidence that accreditation and compliance with set scientific standards is anything but voluntary. You pay to play.

A quick search of The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation for Monsanto Crop Analytics provides us with the following 2 accreditations involving one laboratory HERE and HERE, which are very specific regarding only a certain few procedures.

On the USDA site, in the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) section, the following authority is claimed:

In order to protect plant health, Biotechnology Regulatory Services (BRS) implements the APHIS regulations for certain genetically engineered (GE) organisms that may pose a risk to plant health. APHIS coordinates these responsibilities along with the other designated federal agencies as part of the Federal Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology.

There are regulations for “certain” GE organisms that may pose a risk to plant health. How about posing a risk to human health? Evidently, that doesn’t count. So off we go, down the road, Monsanto hand in hand with the USDA, conducting chemical and biological warfare on American citizens first, then spreading onwards and upwards to the rest of the world. Accreditation? We don’t need no stinkin’ accreditation – not with the USDA covering our backs!

APHIS inspectors and compliance specialists perform targeted inspections of field tests and thoroughly evaluate all potential noncompliance incidents. BRS also evaluates facilities, equipment, records of developers, and potential incidents reported by permittees. Authorizations under the permitting and notification procedures require that noncompliance incidents be self-reported within designated time frames.

A self-reporting clause. The agency, (APHIS/USDA), conducts “targeted inspections” and evaluates “non-compliance” issues that are self-reported by the permittees. It can’t get any better than that for Monsanto.

The Sky’s the Limit

So, without proper oversight, genetic markers in hand, Monsanto and the U.S. government are conducting the world’s largest unscientific, under-regulated experiment on the population at large. And we are paying for it. We are systematically being poisoned, our DNA is changing, new and resistance bacteria and superweeds are cropping up, and Monsanto gets paid for the carnage, courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer. We are literally paying for our own demise at the hands of so-called “scientists” gone wild. This is not a science fiction movie, it is what we are living, and somehow, I don’t think Duck and Cover will cut it.

The downfall of science and the rise of intellectual tyranny

(NaturalNews) The very reputation of so-called “science” has been irreparably damaged by the invocation of the term “science” by GMO lackeys, pesticide pushers, mercury advocates and fluoride poisoners who all claim to have science on their side. It seems that every toxin, contamination and chemical disaster that now infects our planet has been evangelized in the name of “science.”

Where “science” used to be highly regarded in the 1950’s, today the term is largely exploited by pharmaceutical companies, biotech giants and chemical companies to push their own for-profit agendas. Actual science has little to do with the schemes now being pushed under the veil of science.

To make matters even worse for the sciences, many so-called “science bloggers” have been revealed to have financial ties to the very same companies whose profits are shored up by their activities (…).

Rather than defending any sort of scientific truth, science bloggers have become the internet whores of Big Pharma, Monsanto, pesticide manufacturers, chemical companies and toxic mercury factories. There’s hardly a dangerous chemical in widespread use today that the science bloggers haven’t venomously defended as safe and effective. Many are just blatantly paid off by corporate entities to run around the internet pushing GMOs, chemicals and vaccines.

This realization has caused the science bloggers to be widely ridiculed by intelligent people who see right through their thinly-veiled (but well-funded) disinformation campaigns. Where science bloggers once had credibility, they now are seen as intellectual prostitutes for dangerous corporate agendas that benefit powerful companies at the expense of environmental health and human health.

If they weren’t doing all this in the name of science, it wouldn’t be so bad, actually. If they called themselves “corporate whore bloggers” instead of “science bloggers,” their actions wouldn’t be so harmful to the reputation of science itself. But, to the great detriment of actual science, they insist on calling themselves “science bloggers.”

Now the reputation of “science” itself is suffering
Because the for-profit GMO sellouts, poison pushers, vaccine zealots and corporate front groups continue to conduct their activities under the false name of “science,” the term is losing its meaning. This should be cause for alarm among those who practice legitimate science. (Where are the astrobiologists when you need them?)

As we’ve seen all too frequently, “science” can be easily distorted or exploited to achieve a desired political or profiteering goal. But the ruse is rather apparent — the public is awakening to the science fraud and learning that the term “science” doesn’t really mean what it used to. It’s suffering a loss of reputation to such a degree that the term “science” no longer means a system whereby intellectually honest people search for the underlying truths of how nature operates. Today, “science” is used not to search for truth, but to distort the truth.

Replace “science” with “fraud” to understand the spin
Instead of seeking knowledge and understanding, for example, “science” is used as an intellectual bludgeon to halt rational skepticism and discussion on topics such as GMOs, vaccines, mercury fillings, fluoride in the water, the mysterious deaths of animals, the collapse of honeybee populations and so on. It’s a kind of intellectual tyranny that has been invoked against those who oppose any kind of corporate agenda that can be dressed up to look like actual science.

In several contexts, the term “science” has become synonymous with “fraud.” As in the following headlines (replace “science” with “fraud” as you read them):

“It has now been revealed that the researchers who made up the fictitious study results were engaged in SCIENCE.”

“When asked how he came up with the fabricated clinical trial data upon which the FDA approved the drug, discredited researcher Humphrey Brokendata explained he was only engaged in SCIENCE.”

In fact, the vast majority of the popular news reports you might read about so-called “scientific” findings make a whole lot more sense if you replace the word “science” with “fraud.” For example, imagine the words being exchanged in these headlines:

• GMOs backed by solid SCIENCE

• FDA insists its drug approvals are based on SCIENCE

• Monsanto claims the SCIENCE behind its seed technology is better than ever

Vaccines stand their ground this flu season thanks to SCIENCE

You see how suddenly everything makes more sense on these particular topics when you replace “science” with “fraud?”

This isn’t a stretch, either. The “scientific” agenda behind GMOs, for example, has absolutely nothing to do with real science. It is a corporate for-profit agenda that seeks control over the world’s food supply while forcing farmers to buy seeds year after year from one centralized corporate entity. That’s not science. It’s just a monopolistic crime against humanity to assault the basic rights of people to be able to grow their own foods and harvest their own seeds without worrying about those seeds being contaminated with genetic pollution from genetically engineered crops.

The real science on GMOs indicates that reasonable people have every right to be concerned about the DNA pollution of the foods that feed our world. But through the blasphemous invocation of the term “unscientific,” the GMO pushers attempt to characterize rational, reasonable people who hold concerns about GMOs as “unscientific.” As if they didn’t believe in the Law of Gravity or Newtonian physics for macro-sized objects.

The scientific community loses credibility by the day
This endless assault on common sense by those who use the term “science” as a cover for dangerous global experiments in plant and human biology will only further discredit the scientific community. When you see “scientific” doctors and dentists putting their reputations behind things like water fluoridation — which is the blatant mass pollution of the water supply with a toxic hazardous waste chemical — it’s no surprise why the street cred of so-called “scientific thinkers” continues to erode.

This is all very sad to see, of course. I consider myself a proponent of scientific thinking, and I strongly value the Scientific Method as one approach to gaining knowledge. I’m educated in microbiology, genetics, physics and have acquired a considerable amount of scientific knowledge in many other areas. I’m currently studying M-theory ( and the intersection of quantum physics with consciousness. (There’s a taboo topic in conventional scientific circles for ya — don’t talk about consciousness, for God’s sake! To quote Einstein, God may not play dice with the universe… but consciousness does!)

As a proponent of scientific discovery, even I have to admit that science has lost its credibility due in large part to the corporate takeover of science. Whereas science was once a popular and highly respected field of study for young thinkers, very few people in America enter the sciences these days. More and more people are waking up to the reality that many of the great evils that have been unleashed upon our world have been conducted in the name of science: GMOs, seasonal flu vaccines, plastic food containers, pesticides, mercury poisoning, fluoride in the water supply, psychiatric pharmaceuticals and so on.

Science, it turns out, hasn’t saved us: It has quite possibly doomed us. The destruction that has already been unleashed upon our world in the name of science may not be reversible in the era of humankind. We may be setting ourselves up for a global food supply catastrophe due to GMOs and pesticides, for example, and literally billions of human beings may ultimately die from it. “Science” was the invocation behind GMOs and pesticides, even though in truth the whole scheme was pulled off through what can only be called “junk science” or “selected science.”

Real science is a valid tool when used with integrity
Again, it saddens me to see science misappropriated in this way, because true science is a valid and valuable method by which human beings can seek to gain understanding about the universe in which we live. It is not the only pathway to knowledge, of course (a frequent mistaken assumption by those who are steeped in it), but it is a valuable one nonetheless. Yet thanks to today’s corporate-led “scientific” schemes involving GMOs, vaccines, pesticides and other chemicals, the value of science itself is being rapidly lost to the intellectual tyranny demonstrated by those who destroy our world in the name of science.

Where real scientists once used to welcome debate and discussion, today’s “science” advocate operate with the intellectual finesse and flexibility of a two-ton block of granite. You either agree with them or you are branded an idiot. There is no discussion, no debate, no thought and no real science involved. On so many of the big issues that matter today — vaccines, GMOs, mercury, fluoride, pesticides and so on — the “science” position is that of a self-proclaimed dictator (or tyrant) who believes he causes things to be true and factual through the mere act of stating them. That isn’t science. It’s just an advanced form of arrogant bullying framed in the language of science and carried aloft by a never-ending stream of corporate dollars.

It is, in essence, intellectual tyranny.

Science may yet destroy us
It was Oppenheimer who, after playing a key role in the invention of the atomic bomb, quoted these words from the ancient Hindu text known as the Bhagavad Gita: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

Today, a very large segment of the scientific community is engaged in much the same behavior: Destroying our world through the incessant and utterly unscientific advocacy of dangerous, destructive interventions that threaten our food, our waterways and the very future of life on Earth.

So-called “science,” it seems, may ultimately be the destroyer of life as we know it on our planet. And yet “science” is worshipped by its followers as the savior of life on Earth. There is a dangerous disconnect in that situation. Perhaps one of Biblical proportion.

I suspect that one day a future alien civilization will study the history of humankind and attempt to determine how we destroyed ourselves. After sorting through the decomposed rubbish of the long-extinct human civilization, one alien will turn to the other alien and nod its head to say, “It seems their civilization was based on SCIENCE FRAUD.”

P.S. For the record, I am not opposed to actual science, nor the use of the Scientific Method as one avenue through which wisdom may be gained. There are other methods of gaining wisdom, however, such as spirituality, meditation, the study of consciousness and even quantum connections between sentient beings. All of these non-science methods are utterly disregarded by the “scientific” community which believes so strongly in its own dogma that the brains of its top scientists have no room left for any ideas other than their own. That is, by the way, the very definition of a closed mind. It also happens to be the reason why conventional science only advances at the speed at which its dogmatic intellectual tyrants retire or perish.
